Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Allan's ESV with Updated Text ... June 2008?:

Brandon

What do you mean "updated text"? The ESV is already coming out with an update? What kind of changes will there be?

Denis

There was a Translation Oversight Committee meeting in 2005 which resulted in minor textual updates to the ESV text. When I was researching my original purchase of a "good" ESV bible early this year I did look into this a little bit, here is what I found.

From a customer service rep at Crossway:

"The Translation Oversight Committee of the ESV has approved a limited number of changes, similar to what most other translations have done a few years after they were first released for publication. Our sense, however, is that the number of changes is quite a bit less than typically is the case. The vast majority of these involve only minor changes in grammar, punctuation, and footnotes. We have begun to incorporate these changes in new editions of the ESV and in recent printings of the editions that are already in print."

I also inquired about this at evangelicalbible.com and received the following response:

"Since the new interlinear contains the updated text (as will all Bibles published in 2007) we have studied a few books of the Bible to examine changes. One such book was the book of Romans. We found the changes to be primarily confined to footnotes. One example of a change in text is: "And to the one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness," (Romans 4:5) "Trust" has now been changed to "believe." Trust is now a footnote. Another interesting edit is found in Romans 16:1 with dear Phoebe. "I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant.." Now servant has a footnote which reads or "deaconess."

It should be noted that all translations have standing committees to impliment minor changes. When these translation make minor edits the public is not informed. These are minor edits, not a revision by any means."

If you do want to compare, the online version at esv.org is the revised text (this is why occasionally the Max McLean audio will differ slightly - it was produced using the original 2001 text).

In the end, I decided not to wait for the changes to filter through to a quality version before making my purchase.

So what your really saying is if I wait till June I can pick up a good deal on one of the old ones people are upgrading from =D

Denis

Didn't think of that, Frank. Maybe getting my initials on the cover wasn't such a good idea after all :)

Brandon

Wow...thanks for that detailed answered. Really appreciate that.

Cambridge University Press has three "Pitt Minion" ESV editions coming out in June 2008 as well. The URL below should get you the bare info from the CUP site:

Kyle

Thanks for that info on the ESV Pitt Minion David. I'm looking forward to that one. I plan to buy one as soon as they are available.

As for the Allan's ESV due in June, I hope they get the wavy and stiff page thing worked out. It's a shame to have that great of a binding on such an inferior book block. I'm going to hold out on that one until I see some reviews roll in.

Jesus Saenz

It seems that not only will they be using the updated, anglicized text but R.L. Allan will also be using a different printer for their ESV blocks, this from an email I received today. Nicholas Gray is well aware of the issues some have had regarding the stiffness of some of the ESV blocks and is looking to have that resolved for the next printing.

David Dewey

I suspect Allans may be going with the ESV blocks from Cambridge rather than Collins. The timing coincides: the Cambridge Pitt Minion ESV is scheduled for the end of June 2008 as well.

PDS

Good point! I guess we could always confirm that with Allan's??

Jesus Saenz

Cambridge will not be printing anything in the same size as the current ESV1 from Allan's. Collin's is reprinting the Classic Reference using the updated ESV. They are also going to be using a new printer to resolve the smudge issue as well the stiff book block.

Kyle

Hello all,

For those who may not know, the Allan's ES1 with updated text is due to be out at the end of this month (July). I also confirmed with Allan's that this edition will have three ribbon markers and maps.

Kyle

Sorry, that's supposed to be "ESV1".

I just spoke with Allans by email the 2 days ago and said that the ESVs are being held up in printing and may not be out until september

bill

From Margaret at Allans:

"The new ESV bibles have been delayed at the printing stage and may not now be available until September"

I am looking forward to my first Allans ESV, hopefully things pick up in a couple weeks.

Kyle

Thanks for the info Bill. What a bummer. I was looking forward to having mine in August at the latest. The date keeps getting pushed back. I spoke with Nicholas via email at the beginning of June and he said the end of July and even changed the website to reflect that. Oh well, great things are worth waiting for.

bill

Sorry about the news kyle. I am looking forward to getting my first Allan's ESV. Feel to double check with Allans and let me know.

Pastor Ron Parish

I, too, am looking forward to my first Allan's Bible. It was on this blog I first heard about the ESV, and it was a great find, indeed. I have to agree with Kyle; great things are worth the wait. Perhaps the new ESVs will be even better than what we anticipate.

Vincent Ramirez

I just heard from Nicholas at RL Allan and they said that the ESV reprinted sheets were unsuitably preseented to their binders and that the new sheets are being rushed so that they can include the Oxford maps. The bound copies will be delayed until September.
I thought you all would want to know.

Evangelical Bible has a great post documenting the Allan's ESV hold up.

I placed an order for my black ESV1 through Evangelical Bible this morning, and e-mailed them about the approximate time of arrival. Paul from E.B. just e-mailed me back: "Optimistically, by the end of Aug. we should have our stock in." So basically it sounds like we can expect the delivery date to be somewhere in September.

Chris

I just purchased my ESV1 3 months ago. I have only used it about 8 times. The bleed through is too much. Where can I sell it to someone that will admire this?

Knight

Chris,

I had the same problem. Sold mine on ebay. The whole experience ended up costing me $10. Worth it if you ask me.
